Science & Math Service Learning Program Internship
Earn 3 upper-division credits and satisfy various graduation requirements while engaging "academically at-risk" children (3rd-8th grades) in fun, hands-on science or math activities or conducting science demonstrations (Science is Fun). You don't need to be a science or math expert. Appropriate for students of any major and at any level (freshman through senior & grad students).

- No experience necessary. Training is provided.
- All science and math internship courses except UNI 484 & MSE 484 satisfy the General Studies Cultural Diversity Awareness Area requirement.
- Fulfill a semester's community service requirement for some scholarships
- Count as upper-division credit for all undergrads
- May count as upper-division credit within a science major (except for UNI and MTE internships)
- Pre/corequisite lab science classes count towards General Studies: SG/SQ requirements
- Some internship sites require a full background-check and fingerprinting (at no cost to student).
- Transportation from Tempe campus is available.
Internship Details
- No specialized science or math expertise required.
- work with children at a middle-school or elementary school level.
- work closely with your supervisor and fellow interns.
- Lead a small group of 2 to 5 children in fun, hands-on activities. (You may request to work with English-language-learners.)
- Interns work together as a team in the same classroom, developing activities under the guidance of their supervisor.
- Interns work with the same small group of children all semester.
- This fosters the formation of a close relationship with the children so that in addition to teaching science, interns serve as college-student mentors or role models.
- This is particularly important since the high school drop out rate in the communities served is extremely high.
- Brief writting assignments and short readings are designed to help interns reflection upon and learn from their internship experiences.
- There are no exams or term papers.
- You must either have already successfully completed the required class or its equivalent
- Enroll in the pre/corequisite class in addition to the internship

Internship Weekly Time Requirements

- Weekly hour requirements may vary between 6-8 hours per week:
- 5-6 hours for travel time, working with the children, and planning meetings
- 1-2 hours for planning/prep and assignments
