What our students say about Service Learning
Service Learning has impacted every area of my life, this includes academic achievement. I am much more committed to excelling in school and I have learned a lot of valuable skills that will help me excel in any area.
Service learning has more than proved itself to me to be a great experience for anyone. The communication and problem solving skills it forces you to sharpen are valuable to anyone in any career... I will use the skills I learned this semester for the rest of my life.
The contributions I made to the program pale in comparison to the personal rewards I took with me. For starters, the program exposed me to issues and people I would probably not have encountered otherwise. It opened my eyes. And as a result, I feel I have gained a more worldly knowledge of America than many people.
The program provided overwhelming personal growth. Not only did I have to deal with children and all the problems and headaches, but above all else I reaped the joys that come with working with children.
The communication skills, organizational skills, and management skills I gained are applicable to any person seeking a professional career in any field...
The time I spent with Service Learning is something I’d never trade for anything in the world. . . . I got more out of it than I could possibly have put into it in such a short time. . . . Because of Service Learning, I feel I have some sense of direction in my life.
Learning to be more confident in a leadership role is definitely one thing that I have accomplished through this internship. . . . This has been a great experience and one of my favorite classes because of the exciting and unusual things you get to do in the class and I would recommend that every student take at least one Service Learning internship...
My experiences teaching at Salt River Elementary through the Service Learning Program are among the most important I have had in college. Through the past semester, teaching has allowed me to open my eyes to a world I had never seen while learning so much in such a small amount of time. Though I went into the classroom to teach 6th graders about Physical Geography, I leave Salt River feeling the students and the school were a better educator to me than I was to them... My experiences there were unforgettable and are among the best in my years at Arizona State.
Because of the Service Learning Program, I have been inspired by exceptional children and mentored by wonderful faculty and administrators. I have also become a part of a close network of students. Service Learning has made it possible to reach out to the Phoenix community and it has helped me find my place in the ASU community.
The Service Learning Program is one of the best programs I have ever been involved in. Not only are college students learning and growing through their internship, but at-risk children are also getting a new view on life.
Students come away from the courses with a better sense of themselves and an awareness of those in the community who need the time and energy of a dedicated person in order to learn to read, to write a simple sentence, or to trust a new friend.
I have never been more involved in the community than I am now. I am very grateful because Service Learning has taught me a great lesson in humility and kindness towards my fellow man and especially children.
