Explorers Residential College Mission

The Explorers Residential Colleges strive to develop diverse and holistically supportive communities for first-year students by creating a residential environment that instills pride, identity and empowerment throughout students' major and career exploration while increasing awareness for their campus and community.

Explorers Residential College Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  • Actively engage in a holistically supportive exploratory residential community experience.
  • Have access to over 104 intentional programs per year put on by the Peer Ambassador staff.
  • Be aware and utilize campus exploration and academic support resources.
  • Demonstrate an understanding for institutional policies and processes.
  • Have the knowledge and resources necessary to declare a major as soon as they are individually ready.
  • Gain a sense of pride and identity while feeling empowered throughout their individual dynamic career and major journey.

Ambassador Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engage residents with intentional programming opportunities providing a diverse set of learning outcomes.
  • Attend mandatory paraprofessional training before classes begin in August and January.
  • Attend weekly meetings on Tuesdays from 7-10 p.m. with Explorers Residential Communities coordinator.
  • Help recruit future ambassadors and participate in the selection process.
  • Maximize students’ academic achievements by assisting them in their social, cultural and academic transition and adjustment to the university.
  • Offer students an opportunity to lead by example and help each other learn while forming life-long friendships and a connection to their community.
  • Serve as a resource and liaison to students living in the residential college community for academic, social and personal issues.
  • Serve as an example of student success by demonstrating effective leadership and involvement in curricular and co-curricular programs.
  • Help establish and build community and maintain enthusiasm within your assigned floor and the entire residential college by being a friendly, recognizable and accessible mentor and leader.
  • Create and distribute announcements, flyers and information for all residential college affiliated programs and services.

Desired Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled as an ASU student in good academic standing with 25 credits or more by fall 2011 and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75. However, a 3.0 cumulative GPA is preferred.
  • Must be enrolled full-time as an ASU student during the entire 2011-12 academic year.
  • Previous experience living in a residential college or working with residence life, academic support services or exploratory students.
  • Good communication skills, enthusiasm and professionalism.
  • Initiative to develop new ideas autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility in scheduling when necessary and availability to work some nights and weekends.

Hours Per Week

Approximately 10 to 15 hours per week, some evenings and weekends. Hours will vary.

Length of Employment

2012-2013 academic year.

Compensation

  • A free single room each semester (may have to share bath with suitemates).
  • $500 stipend per semester.
