Responsibilities

Parent vs. Student Responsibility

In order to be successful in college, it is important that students learn how to be college students. Learning the policies and procedures of a large university can be challenging, but academic advisors are here to help teach students the skills necessary to navigate the rules and processes they need. These skills include how to acquire classes, succeed in college-level subjects, and, of course, graduate. Learning how to schedule classes is a key skill students must acquire the first semester at college. We encourage your students to learn this skill by themselves with the help of our staff.

Student responsibilities:

  1. Checking My ASU for important messages and taking action on any "To Do" list items. My ASU is our main portal for communicating with students. Notifications from financial aid, registration holds and other important information will appear in the Task List when students login with their ASURITE.
  2. Registering for classes. This is a skill that students need to learn, and be comfortable with, during his/her college career.
  3. Plan classes for the next four years. Creating a four-year plan helps students get a big picture of the courses/major they are pursuing. This helps them reflect on class choices and hopefully generate the following questions: “Am I really interested in this class?” “Do I really want to study _____ for the next...16 weeks?” “...4 to 5 years?”

Parent responsibilities:

  1. Support your student’s exploration, ask what interests them, which classes they enjoy most, let them dream a little (Explore).
  2. When they have some majors to consider, they can now research the options and start reality testing (Discover). Ask what they have discovered.
  3. Four-year plans (major maps), available on eAdvisor, are a great resource for planning.
  4. Share your own challenges in choosing your career path! A little empathy can be helpful.
