Opportunity Knocks

There are two ways to deal with failure. The first way is to avoid the negative feelings associated with failure. Students who protect themselves in this manner expend a lot of energy denying or defending their failure.

The other way to deal with failure is to acknowledge that errors and mistakes were made and then seek ways to correct them. By accepting this responsibility, the student then has the power to make the needed changes to avoid failure in the future. There is certainly some discomfort in admitting you goofed, and there is no guarantee that your remedies will work, but, at the very least, you’re allowing yourself to consider ideas that could help your situation.

In many respects, academic trouble is opportunity knocking. It’s a red flag indicating a potential for growth and development. You came to college to learn, and here’s a great chance to do so. But also remind yourself that growth and development involves a certain amount of risk and the possibility of failure. But, just as crashing is part of learning to ride a bike, once you’ve learned to ride, it’s something you don’t forget.
