Successful strategies require action on your part. In other words, you have
to do something (‘Waiting for inspiration’ doesn’t count).
Some of the following ideas may be helpful to you. But again, be realistic.
If you’re not committed to trying something, don’t say you will.
- Visit your instructors during his/her office hours at least once
a semester.
- Take your class notebook, tests/quizzes, and papers along to go over with your instructor.
- Determine what is unclear and bring a list of questions to ask your instructor.
- Seek tutoring and/or study labs – Math Lab, Writing Center. http://studentsuccess.asu.edu/
- Make use of the Learning Support Services: http://www.asu.edu/studentaffairs/lss/
- University Supplemental Instruction Course (free organized study
sessions)
- Study Strategies (best time of day, location, distractions, flashcards,
recopying class notes, outlining chapters, etc.)
- Attend a workshop: http://www.asu.edu/studentaffairs/lss/
- Time Management and Organizational Skills
- Study Skills and Learning Styles
- Mastering the Lecture
- Conquering Textbook Reading
- Test Taking Strategies
- Study in small groups with fellow classmates; quiz each other.
- Re-write notes from class to assist in understanding materials.
- Evaluate your time and prioritize. Get time management assistance.
- Work fewer hours or take less credit hours!
- Find employers who are willing to be flexible in your work schedule
so you can be academically successful.

- Get a baby sitter (or dog sitter) so that you have time to study.
- Attend class and pay attention.
- Read the next class meeting’s topic so you already have an
idea on what will be covered.
- Bring your textbook/assigned readings to class; refer to them throughout
the discussion to supplement your notes.
- Eat well, exercise, and get quality sleep. http://www.asu.edu/studentaffairs/wellness/about/index.html
- Go to the Writing Center for assistance on all papers. http://studentsuccess.asu.edu/
- Visit the Counseling Center regarding personal issues and concerns,
test anxiety, roommate issues, time management tips, etc. http://www.asu.edu/studentaffairs/counseling/
- Visit Career Services to find out what employers are looking for
in an employee. http://www.asu.edu/studentaffairs/career/
- Choose a major. If you have a career/academic goal, it is easier
to stay on track. Visit "Major and Career Exploration" for
help. http://uc.asu.edu/majorexploration or http://eadvisor.asu.edu/
Of course, these strategies will only be helpful until you have decided
how you will implement the ones you have chosen. Saying you will choose
a major is not the same as saying how you are going to choose a major.
